Phuket nightlife has undergone something of a metamorphosis recently and has started to cater seriously for the heavier club music which is so popular in nearby Thailand. This is a vast change for the Phuket nightlife scene that was, until quite recently, dominated by Thai-style clubs and cheesy Western tourist spots.
Thai style clubs still dominate the market – especially if you move away from the tourist areas – and locals still fill these spots on a weekend to share a bottle of whiskey or Jack Daniels and dance to local bands playing classic covers. In the tourist areas the clubs that are geared towards the Western taste of cheesy music and cheap booze still line the streets.
The heavy clubbing spots that are relatively new to the Phuket nightlife are catching on, albeit slowly. The music tastes are still predominantly commercial and pop, but locals and tourists alike with heavier music tastes are being recognized and catered for.
The variety only ads to the experience of the Phuket nightlife; it is certainly the case that there is something here for everyone, and while it has some way to go before it can match the likes of Bangkok, so do about 99% of the places in the world.
