A lot of people use their own personal names when branding their blog and if you’re just starting out you should take some things into consideration. First question you should ask yourself is whether you’re starting a personal blog or a business blog because there’s a magnificant difference between these two and your domain can have a serious impact on your market.
Personal name gives your visitors a feel of warmness and safeness and it’s a lot easier to connect with people through your own name so DanBecket.com would be a good choice when starting a personal blog because it gives you a piece of credibility and recognition.
However, I don’t recommend using DanBecket.com when starting a serious business blog or at least a blog that hopes to be in business or plans to do business in the future. Choose a niche name instead. If I search for a website about blogging tips I would always choose problogger.net over johnchow.com no matter what johnchow.com has to offer because when I see problogger.com I instantly know that’s exactly what I’m looking for. Personal names create confusion and by choosing a niche name people in that very moment know what your blog is about. A niche name also helps you a lot with SEO – it’s a lot easier to rank for “blogging tips” with bloggingtips.com than with danbecket.com – and there’s one more thing left that people like to forget when starting a blog, selling your blog. This is business. People buy and sell blogs all the time and if John Chow decides to sell his blog I don’t know who would buy John’s personal name branded with his blog since that wouldn’t be John Chow anymore but Some Dude. Keep that in mind when starting your business.
