Ares Galaxy is well known in the industry as being the ‘gold standard’ of Ares P2P filesharing software. How did it get this reputation? Simply by being the best out there for quite some time. Until now, when there are a number of Ares versions that are simply better; they have copied the best bits and improved on those that are lacking. None of these – Ares Galaxy included – can hold a candle to the technological advances seen in Ares Ultra, Ares Vista and Ares Ultimate et al. It is to these that customers will slowly flock as the old boy lays down and prepares for his rest.

The app store looks like it’s going to be of wonderful benefit to iPhone and Mac owners alike. All it needs now is some developers to get in gear and provide us with some apps! These apps, Apple told us in a keynote speech, were going to cost an average of $10 when purchased through the app store. Apple is reported to be taking 30% of any sales made through the store for its own costs – a small price to pay, no doubt, for the free hosting and distribution that it has agreed to provide to the developers.

Apple may be surprised by the results of a recent survey conducted at WWDC by Gene Munster. Munster, an analyst for Piper Jaffray, interviewed around 20 iPhone developers who were intending on placing their programs in the app store. The results showed that around 71% of the apps in the app store were likely to be offered for free. Apple’s cut? 30% of nothing is still nothing.

Of those apps that were charged for, the average cost came to just $2.29. This is leaps and bounds from that magic $10 figure bounded around by Apple as being the average across the app store.

Lawmakers and politicians in Oklahoma have passed a new law that will see the hallucinogenic drug Salvia banned. Salvia is a naturally occurring hallucinogenic with potency, when taken in its concentrated form, is similar that of LSD. It is the most potent naturally occurring hallucinogenic known. Its opponents will be glad to see Salvia banned.

Oklahoma joins Kansas and eight other states which currently ban or restrict the use of Salvia in some way. There are another 20 or so states that are considering banning or limiting Salvia. If lawmakers manage to get Salvia banned from the streets, then it may just drive it underground.

Salvia’s notoriety grew a teenager in Delaware tragically took his own life. Key to the suicide, his parents say, was his heavy use of the Salvia herb. There have been no direct (or proved) cases where Salvia has been directly responsible for a death.

Seeing Salvia banned is on the top of many people’s lists, but it is currently legal under federal US drug laws and is widely available from stockists who operate – quite legally – over the Internet.

Users and drug agents agree that chewing or smoking the herb produces hallucinations and can cause a person to become dizzy and impair their speech.

Unfortunately it is a fact that some entrepreneurs earn their money by bundling undesirable spyware with software that they then offer to their visitors to their sites. Ares Destiny is a case in point and its association with the hateful Dealio software has really made me think.

Ares Lite was thought, in the ‘old days’ of 2002 to be the only version of Ares that came without parasitic spyware (and the ‘Lite’ part of the name represented this). The big daddies of today’s filesharing programs are Ares Ultra, Ares Ultimate. Ares Vista works well with Windows Vista, and Ares Galaxy is the old favorite that everyone is familiar with. Any of these would make great choices. Ares Lite has been overtaken somewhat.

Ares Lite is a great piece of software but it was designed for a time when hardware had a fraction of the power we’ve got now. It served it’s purpose and now it’s time to move on.

Some questions to ask yourself:

Phuket nightlife has undergone something of a metamorphosis recently and has started to cater seriously for the heavier club music which is so popular in nearby Thailand. This is a vast change for the Phuket nightlife scene that was, until quite recently, dominated by Thai-style clubs and cheesy Western tourist spots.

Thai style clubs still dominate the market – especially if you move away from the tourist areas – and locals still fill these spots on a weekend to share a bottle of whiskey or Jack Daniels and dance to local bands playing classic covers. So far so good. Ares Destiny works pretty much like other versions of Ares – although the interface is a little dated – and there’s not much that can go wrong.

Those ‘other costs’ that I was talking about? Ares Destiny comes pre-packaged with the Dealio as serving software. Whilst Dealio might be touted as a ‘price comparison toolbar’ it is, in reality, a nasty piece of malware that you most definitely will struggle to remove from your computer. For this reason it is advisable to steer well clear of Ares Destiny if at all possible.
