Online sales overtaking in-store CD sales

Buying music online is quickly becoming very popular and it is gaining momentum. A Forrester Research study suggests that by 2012 the money spend on music downloads will be greater than that spend on CD sales. A sobering thought for those business that rely on CD sales. Change is good, though, and it is times like these that weed the stagnant organizations from those that really know how to innovate.

There are a number of reasons why people choose music downloads over CD purchases. There are those of us, though, that enjoy shopping for CDs and enjoy having the CD on a shelf in our home: obviously not that many of us, though!

Legal MP3 downloads are expected to grow at a rate of about 23% a year over the next five years with the ‘unofficial’ MP3 downloads likely coming in at much higher levels. Filesharing programs like Limewire are enjoying a serious boom period and it is only likely to get better for them.

I own alot of MP3’s.. but I still love having a solid cd in my hand with the artwork that the band made… just for the cd. Maybe i’m just old fashioned though.

I still buy CDs if I really like the artists. If I just want a song or two, then I’ll just buy the download. I’m one of the people who likes to have the CD on the shelf. Plus, I can have the CD and I can upload the CD to my iPod.
