Jakob Dupont Knudsen wrote a nice post that made me think about SEO and promotion. In his Link Love To Old Posts article he talks about the importance and benefits of linking to other bloggers in the blogosphere.

Link love posts seems to more popular than ever before. People do this to show they appreciate other people’s post, to make people aware of their own blog, as well as hoping for a link back sooner or later. The idea is good, and getting inbound links is always nice.

Linking to other bloggers can be of significant value since building your search engine rankings depends on your backlinks and how do you expect to get a backlink if you don’t link to others? Sharing is important and many people ought to forget that. Sharing links has many benefits:

1. SEO and PR
You’ll agree with me that backlinks are everything when you work on building your PageRank and SEO but most people make a mistake by ignoring small, new and fresh backlinks because they think those won’t bring much to their blog’s PR. Wrong! Everybody has to start at some point but usualy they keep on building and building and those small uninportant backlinks suddently become big backlinks, that’s why you should invest in new blogs. It’s a lot easier and sane to build 100 backlinks from blogs with PR0 than to get 1 backlink from a blog with PR6. Why? Because in a year more than half of those PR0s will jump to PR2-4 and your PR6 will probably increase one level, that’s why.

2. Promotion
No ad out there can bring you that much popularity and traffic than a word from your fellow blogger. When you link to others they will probably link back to you and when their visitors see a suggestion they’ll visit your blog and if they like it, they’ll recommend it to others and it goes on and on. Free promotion is more powerful than any paid ad, don’t ignore it.

3. Building friendship
When you show link love you don’t just put a link on your blog, you make friends and online friends are as important as your real friends. Building communities online can bring you many benefits and someday you may want to do business with your blogger friends or other people and this is where your friendship plays an important role. Build trust and expand your niche because the level of trust is important when you do business online.
