How To Build Backlinks in 4 Easy Steps

If you want your blog to gain high PR, rank better in SERPs and attract traffic you will have to build strong backlinks. I know there’s been a lot said about backlinking so I’ll just present four easy steps I recommend. I realize this is time consuming but it’s a must if you wish everything nice for your blog.

1. Social Bookmarking
Let’s start off with these. Many people underestimate the power of social bookmarking websites thinking it’s a waste of time since you never get to the front page but it’s not just about that. Your articles stay there forever and everyday people surf Digg so it’s a good source of free daily traffic because your posts might be what Digg visitors are looking for. Let’s name some sites worth using: Digg, Del.icio.us, Spurl, Blinkbits, Blinklist, Bluedot, Ma.gnolia, Reddit, Technorati, Kinja, PlugIm, Blogg-Buzz, BlogBookmark, Blogmarks, StumbleUpon

2. Comments
What’s better way to let people know about your blog than leaving comments on other people’s blogs. Spam is unacceptable and don’t write one-liners but make interesting and quality comments and people will more likely visit your blog. Comment on as many blogs as you can in your niche to grow a big net of backlinks.

3. Forums
Forums are a good way to increase traffic and build backlinks, especially crowded forums specializing in one or two topics. I get many visitors from big forums like SitePoint, DigitalPoint, NamePros, SEOChat, Freewebspace, Webhostingtalk and dnScoop. Don’t overreact with your advertising because you might get banned, a decent link in your signature and profile is enough.

4. Link Exchange
Find blogs related to yours and ask bloggers to exchange links. Don’t look for high PR blogs because you won’t get a link on their blogroll unless a) your know the owner and ask him for a favor, b) your have a very unique and interesting website or c) you have a higher PR than competition. Look for blogs in your own range and watch out for blogs with potential because they might get successful and drive you free traffic.

Work hard and eventually you’ll see results but there’s a difference between driving traffic and holding traffic. It’s not that hard to drive hundreds or even thousands of unique visitors every day but it’s hard to keep them and make them return to your blog so content is still a priority.

Gaining backlinks is not hard, especially if you follow these steps. The problem is that it requires work, and more work! :)

Indeed, be patient and work hard - something most people are not used to.

You can get lots of backlinks easy but Google will probably penalize you and you don’t want to be messing with the big G.

The most important is to build backlinks legally, cause once you get banned by Google - you can practically close your website for good :)
All the effort and time spent on building website is then thrown away.
There is no such thing as earning overnight money - work work work - that’s all there is to it…

Darko Matic: Exactly, Google is very sensitive when it comes to getting lots of backlinks in a short period of time that’s why you need to build your backlinks slowly and most of all you need to build quality backlinks which requires a lot of time and hard work

Daniel,

Once again, great notes to the class. How important is search engine submissions? Or will your site eventually be “picked up” by the major search engines? thanks.

Your site cannot be “eventually” picked up by search engines if:

a) it’s not submitted to SE dir
or
b) it doesn’t have a backlink on any other website

Search engine submission is not important at all because they crawl websites and look for new links. That’s how your website gets indexed.

Forums indeed can build huge backlinks, just take a look at DigitalPoint.

This isn’t actually 100% true, at least not in Google’s case. I’ve had a number of 1 page sites with not a single backlink get indexed.

One such site was one I had setup for my daughter, it only had about 20 words on it and was since left. 3-4 weeks later it was indexed in Google.
