First thing when starting a blog is to choose your niche. It’s not enough to just choose it, you have to choose it properly. As you may know and I’ve said this at least a gazillion times, there are million blogs out there and more or less they present a challenge to you. If you want to stay in the business you must sweap your competition away and to do that you must stand out from the crowd. I know it’s easy to say that, but that’s just the way it is. Get rich or die trying.

1. Things you’re good at and enjoy doing
Sit down and think about things you love to do and things you enjoy. Take a piece of paper and start writing everything that comes into your mind. Ask yourself if this is what you want to do because it would be a waste of time to start something and abandon it after a while. Find something you’re good at and like at the same time. I’m sure you’re good at something, everybody has a talent for a thing or two. Preview your past work and find out what you do best no matter what it is about, whether it is swimming, dressing or oil painting. Try to remember everything. Combine your skills with things you like to do and you’re get a pretty good image about what can you write about as an expert, although you don’t neccessary have to be an expert just passionate enough.

2. What do you want to write about?
Blogging is something that takes time, a lot of time. You can’t start a blog thinking you will get famous within two months, it doesn’t work that way. People put huge amount of time and hard work to their blogs in order to get famous and successful and usualy it takes years before your blog gets known web wide so think twice if you really want to write about that particular topic. Take a piece of paper and write down what you would like to write about no matter how much blogs are there or how hard the competition is. Write down your wishes and shorten the list to 3 - 5 topics.

3. Define your goals
Before you even start you should define your goals. What are you trying to achieve with your blog? Are you just going to write for the sake of it, do you want to help people out, spread your word across the globe or just make money? Think about whether you’re going to write for the people or the money because if you’re going for the first option it doesn’t matter what the competition is but if you’re planning to make money you should choose something less abused.

4. Blog potential
Ask yourself, does your blog have potential? Before making any moves go out and learn the competition. Visit as many blogs and websites as possible about the niche you’ve chosen and see if there’s any room left for you. You don’t want to get sucked into a net of gazillion sites about the same thing because chances are you’re going to fail. There’s no need for ten million blogs about soccer where there are only few of them about baskeball. Do you have the guts to step into the mine field? Think if you’re able to attract traffic because people already visit blogs about the topic they like regularly. Can you do better than competition?

5. Ma’ dollaz, ma’ munny, ma’ paypuhh
More and more people every day decide to make money blogging so this makes things even harder. We’re not who-cares-I-blog-for-my-people attitude anymore, this is where things become more serious. If you’re out to make money you can’t afford to spend time for something that won’t work. You do learn from mistakes but there’s plenty of examples out there to learn from so spare yourself. Is your niche capable of bringing profit to your pocket? Are there enough of quality products you can sell, is the domain popular enough so you can earn with CPC program? Remember, there are many revenue programs available and it’s up to you to choose the right one because not all will work the same on every topic you chose as your niche so be careful.

There is no way to choose a perfect niche that will make you an instant millionaire, you learn by trial and error. All you can do is minimize the chances of failing and try to make it in the blogosphere. If you fail blogging, don’t let it keep you down. Learn from your mistakes so next time you’ll know what to avoid and how to do it better. You can always start two or three niches at the same time but be sure to have enough time for each one of them and enough topics to write about. Good luck!
