Although Google looks at over 100 different criteria (which can change in importance over time) for ranking websites, there are five aspects or elements that are currently deemed a must do if you’re serious about top ranking on Google. There are also other elements that are important also, but we’ll leave that for some other time. The following are listed in approximate order of importance, with the first item being much more important than the others:
1. Keywords used in the title of your pages (between the TITLE tags)
2. Keywords used in headings (H1) and in the first paragraph of your blog
3. Keywords used in link text, both on your blog as well as on other blogs
4. The PageRank value of your pages
5. Pages that contain at least 200 words or relevant text content (the more pages the better)
I know you’re sick of talking about keywords all the time but people seem to forget the importance of relevant keywords, not just keywords in general. To rank higher on Google, you just need to optimize your blog for your best keywords, get as many important and relevant websites to link to you and make sure anchor texts are being properly set up.

Nice directory you have there, thanks for stopping by.

What’s your site?
Daniel,
I know yahoo and msn put more emphasis on keywords than google does (at least that’s what i have figured out). I thought google was more about the *content* than keywords. Great article. thanks.

Google does love content indeed, especially fresh content every day that’s why it’s more appropriate to run a blog rahther than a static website for SEO purposes.
I heard that Google just changed the algorithm a lot - are these tips still the top 5?

Google can tweak their algorithm a little bit but they can’t change the essentials.
Helpful. Bookmarked-thanks!
